Fontenelle Dam creates one of the most productive tailwater fisheries in the western United States. Below the dam, the Green River provides anglers with a classic tailwater experience—consistent flows and stable water temperatures support an abundant food supply and ideal habitat for trout growth.
Even though this section doesn’t always boast the astronomical “fish-per-mile” numbers of busier tailwaters, it consistently holds a solid population — past surveys sampled as many as 630 trout per mile in a 4.5-mile section. What that means for you: the fish are there, healthy, strong, and often under-fished, giving stealthy, thoughtful anglers real opportunity for great hook-ups.
The mix is excellent — rainbows, browns, and cutthroats share the river’s riffles and runs, and the browns especially get substantial — deep, powerful, wild tails forged by cold water and strong currents. Many of these fish fall in that 16–18-inch sweet spot, with plenty of bigger ones lurking deeper and smarter.
Set within a high-desert landscape, Fontenelle is a true oasis for anglers. Its accessible water, steady flows, and productive runs make it an excellent destination for both wade and float fishing. Whether you’re seeking trophy trout or simply a memorable day on the river, Fontenelle delivers one of the West’s finest fishing experiences.
